Beach Jam

2019

My generation has watched the world become dependent on plastic in all its forms. We love its shiny, colorful dependability and durability. Inexpensive to make, we have imagined and created ways to use it in almost all that we do. Carbon-based oil, the grandmother of modern addictions, is it’s main ingredient. Created to make our lives work better, indestructible plastic is clogging up our oceans and piling up over and under the earth. When broken down into tiny particles, it floats in the air and into our lungs. For a while now, some friends and I have been collecting plastic that washed up on Venice Beach in California, hoping to use it for a collaborative piece. I put plastic in a spice jar to show what we humans still need, use and love plastic in spite of ourselves.
