Make New Friends but Keep the Old,
One is Silver and the Other is Gold

2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic I had a dream. George Floyd, a Black man, had just been murdered by the police. In LA, pro- tests turned to looting. The dream was about friendship, but anxiety and White guilt were below the narrative.

The dream reminded me of an old song, a round that I learned when I was a girl scout and gives this piece its title. I painted found objects, gold, silver and black and arranged them on a sixteen-inch plastic disk. Circles keep the eye moving.

When singing a round, in order for it to sound musical, each singer listens to all of the other voices, while focusing on her own part. It could be a metaphor for curing our ailing democracy.
